A liter is a unit of measurement, which is used for measuring liquids. It can also be used to measure items such as berries. It is a metric measurement. One liter of liquid is the equivalent of 1,000 cubic centimeters of fluid. Interestingly, one liter of water at 0˚ Celsius weighs almost exactly one kilogram - therefore, one milliliter weighs almost exactly one gram.

If you had one liter of liquid, you would have more liquid that a US liquid quart, but less liquid than a US dry quart.

The symbol for the world "liter" used to be a lower case letter l. However, this soon caused confusion for a number of reasons. In handwriting, the lower case letter l often looks identical to the number 1, which could result in serious confusion. In addition, on typewriters the number 1 was often created using a lower case letter l, meaning the two looked exactly the same. As a result, in most English speaking countries, the word "liter" is usually placed on packaging or in recipes, rather than using a symbol to represent the word instead.

Another way to measure liquid or items like berries and ice cream is by using the measurement of gallons. One US gallon is the equivalent to 3.79 liters, meaning two US gallons are equivalent to 7.57 liters and so on. To add to the confusion, English and American gallons are different sizes. One UK gallon is the equivalent of 1.2 US gallons. This means that one UK gallon is smaller than the US gallon. It also means that one UK gallon is the same as 4.45, or roughly four and a half, liters.

In the UK, the word liter is spelled differently to how it is spelled in the United States. In Great Britain, the word liter is spelled litre.
