Gallons  4 + 3 + 5 = 12
Quarts = 4 + 2 + 2 = 8  There are 4 qts/gallon so this is 2 gallons.

Gallons = 12+2 =14

Pints = 2 + 1=3

You have 14 gallons and 3 pts

There are 8 pts in a gallon.

3pts ( 1gal/8pts) = 3/8 gallons.  (add this to 14)

14 3/8 gallons

Make a column starting with gallons, quarts and pints 6g 0q 8p. Now knowing the conversions, convert pints to quarts (2p=1q so 8p=4q and change your column. 6g 4q 0p now subtract the 3quarts and you get 6 gallons, 1quart. Now convert the gallons, 1gallon= 4quarts so 6 gallons= 24quarts added to the 1quart and the answer is 6gal -- 8pts minus 3qts= 25quarts. I hope you understand this, it comes in very handy when you have to figure how to bake or divide liquid measures.
