Pluto is no longer considered a planet, so there are now officially 8 planets in our solar system.

  • Pluto was dropped to the status of "dwarf planet" in 2006 when scientists discovered many other planetary bodies of similar size. It was either stop calling Pluto a planet, or all similar-sized floating space ice would also have to be included.
  • There's still a lot of disagreement within the astrology community whether Pluto should have been cut from the solar system's "roster".

Since the downgrading of Pluto from a planet to a mis-positioned Asteroid (It's not in the Asteroid belt) there are considered only to be 8 planets. Lowell, in the 19th century, postulated the existence of another gas giant way out beyond Pluto (it was the search for this superplanet that resulted in the discovery of Pluto). Some astronomers believe, based upon gravitational "disturbances", that such a planet might exist.
