I think it depends on who the "other" is. Some people I feel great knowing I can help. You see them trying to make things better for themselves or someone just had something bad happen and you want to help.

If it is someone telling me they don't have money for groceries and I see a picture on Facebook of their kid in a new outfit playing with a new toy. I have no problem going out and treating myself to a pedicure.  (I also know the grandparents will feed the child.)

Both. I'm very very picky 🌵now, as to who I help with money. I'll give a $1 💵 only and lots of 🙏prayer😄.

I learned the hard way I need to be just as happy as the people I help😊.

I try to mix it up ! I'll always help someone if I can but I don't mind kicking back and doing something for me either. So, all in all, they both make me happy in their own way.

Dear Zack,

I don't think it's either/or...at some point, you can't really be happy until you are doing for others...it's who we are as human beings...

For a superb disagreement to my perspective, read Ayn Rand THE FOUNTAINHEAD. She does a great job, but I think she only covers the first step...what she talks about will really get boring after a while.

Exactly, Tom Jackson...I thought ATLAS SHRUGGED was quite telling in the face of the 2008 Great Recession...
I still find her a prepossessing writer, enjoy her...

Seems to me, when I was a teenager back in the middle ages, that Ayn Rand was on the "banned list."

Hmmm...I know she is controversial, and there is a whole philosophy now espousing her message...can't recall what that movement is called...

I am not a "do-er" of myself. LOL! I am not materialistic. I like simple things. My kids and husband come first in my line of doing things for others. I guess the only time I ever do for myself is when I am in a situation where I feel if I don't take care of myself first then how can I take care of my family? That is usually if I am the one who gets sick first. Anyways.... I just re read your question. It makes me happier to do for others not myself. LOL!
