The cliff has a similar height to an average building. There's an ocean that is next to the cliff. The ocean is way deeper than the cliff. If the person were to jump off the cliff and land in the ocean, would that person survive?

Dear Anonymous,

Cliff diving is considered an extreme sport because it is so dangerous. The competition height is 26.4 m (90 feet) up to 28 meters, which is something like 8 or 9 stories...so you can compare that with your average building. The divers always enter the water feet first, and there is lots of special protocol to be as safe as possible.

Cliff diving as a sport has an interesting history, dating back 'to 1770, when King Kahekili, the last king of Maui, leapt from Kaunolu, a 63-foot (19-meter) cliff and entered the water below without causing a splash. For his regular feats of flying from the cliffs, the king earned the nickname "birdman." Later, he made his warriors jump from cliffs to prove their courage and loyalty.'

The average building where? I live in a small town and there are no buildings over two stories. If the cliff were to stories, it is easily survivable. However the average building in NYC is over 30 stories, and that would most likely not be survivable.

Even at 2 stories ... There is a possibility of death, just due to the surface tension of water.  That's why doing a "belly flop" hurts so much.

From two stories, I think the average person can survive by landing with his two feet.

Depends how they hit.
If you hit with your feet flat and legs locked, you're probably going to break some bones.

I think the average person can survive from jumping off 2 stories high. The ocean is way deep than the cliff, which means you don't have to worry about the force pulling you down to the ocean floor. The person doesn't land with his legs locked. Twenty feet into the ocean isn't too bad.

Not a precise answer, but as you go higher, you might as well be jumping onto concrete.

And Mythbusters had an episode explaining how those high divers who dive into shallow tanks at exhibitions don't die.

The ocean needs to be deeper the higher you jump, due to the amount of force pulling down.
