Oxide is a chemical compound that contains an atom of oxygen, along with other different chemical elements. Major part of the crust of the earth consists of oxides. Oxides are formed when the elements are oxidized with the contact of air. When combustion takes place on hydrocarbons the two main oxides, Carbon dioxide and Carbon monoxide are merged. Even some of the materials that are said to be pure elements sometimes contain certain coatings of oxide. One of the examples of this is the foil of Aluminium which has a very thick skin of Al2O3 which protects the foil from being corroded.

The oxides which have more of electropositive elements, they are simply basic, these are called basic anhydrides. If water is added, they become more of basic hydroxides.
