An ERD is a neccessary diagram for the initial formation on definition of a database for a related application. An ERD specifies the necessary links and relationships between tables including primary and foreign keys, relationships (one to many, one to one, many to one, etc) and allows for the inclusion of bridging entities. ERD's aid in simplifying and contstruction of well formed and structured databases.
