When we swallow, the soft palate closes off the nasal passages from the throat to prevent food from entering the nose and the epiglottis folds over the voice box to prevent food entering the windpipe.  The food then slides into the esophagus and is swept towards the stomach with muscular contractions called peristaltic waves.
The oesophagus is about 25cm long and has 2 sphincters which open to allow food and liquids to pass through to the stomach.  The lower or gastro-oesophageal sphincter is especially important in preventing reflux.

The walls of the oesophagus propel food to the stomach; not by gravity, but by using rhythmic waves of muscular contractions called peristalsis :) hope this helps

The esophagus is the tube like structure from the throat to the stomach that contracts on food to get the food to pass on down to the stomach.

Esophagus is a tiny hose-like tube that connects mouth to
the stomach. When it leaves the mouth, it goes in a straight path and passes through the diaphragm muscle
and enters the stomach. The function of esophagus is to transfer food from mouth to stomach. The walls of esophagus are composed of
muscles, which keep on doing motion in wave-like form because of the contractions. These contractions of muscles push food into the
stomach, thereby making it an important organ of digestive system.

Esophagus is a muscular tube in the vertebrates which is involved in the digestion process. The foods enters into esophagus through the process of peristalsis. During this process, the respiratory tube is closed and the food directly goes into esophagus. The walls of the esophagus are lined with muscles which actively participate in peristaltic process to swallow the food and send it to the stomach. Therefore, the major function of the esophagus is to transfer food from mouth to stomach.

It is in the digestive system and transfers food from the mouth to the stomach in a rope-like tube. It lies between the trachea and the spine. Also passes down the neck, pierces the diaphragm just to the left of the mid-line, and joins the cardiac (upper) end of the stomach.
