Tuning forks, used to tune pianos to the right pitch, and bells of all kinds are made from metal, for one particular reason. The dissipation of energy in metals is very low, so when struck the energy is caught in a damping effect causing it to resonate.

This is why metal strings can also be used on instruments like guitars, violins, harps, and steel drums.
