Incorrect.  First of all everything is food for something else.  If that organism on the bottom of the chain were to die off, it could cause the other organism that rely on it for survival to either die as well, or be forced to alternative means of survival, which for a lot of organism is not possible.

Secondly, if an organism higher on the food chain were to die, that could cause problems for even higher organisms, but the lower organism would not be impacted negatively and possibly increase its chances of survival if it's food for that higher organism that is now gone.  This could cause an explosion of that lower organism's population, which could in turn severely harm other organism or cause other populations to flourish due to all the extra food.  If humans went extinct, it would be the best thing for life on earth.  We are far superior to all organisms on the planet in terms of intelligence and mostly superior in physiologically, for example, we are very agile, just think about the absolutely astonishing things humans have accomplished as well as the atrocities that we have committed.

I'm not saying that if squirrels die its going to cause our Bio dome to collapse, but it can cause hardships and extinction of organism that are dependent on them.  Ask yourself this, what organism on this earth depends solely on humans.

I hope this clarifies things a little.

Nothing major, an organism at the bottom of the food chain would be relatively unimportant, animals or organisms the next level up would simply feed on something else, rotten corpses, particles of food etc, it would be more of an impact if an organism at the top of the food chain (us) died off.
