There are three major forms of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. All three were formed many hundreds of millions of years ago before the time of the dinosaurs - hence the name fossil fuels. It gets its name from carbon, the basic element in coal and other fossil fuels, Carbon which is still used in Latin languages, but pronounced with the accent on the second syllable, describes coal.

China is the biggest producer of coal in the world, while the United States contains the world's largest coal reserves. China and the US are also among the largest coal consumers. Other important coal producing countries include: Australia, India, South Africa, and Russia.

The coal is often transported by rail, and then onto huge ships which transport the exported coal.
