Cactus

Cacti are part of the Caryophyllales, which also include the following plants:
  • beets
  • gysophila
  • spinach amaranth
  • tumbleweeds
  • carnations
  • rhubarb
  • buckwheat
  • plumbago
  • bougainvillea
  • chickweed
  • knotgrass
Cacti adapt to extremely arid and hot environments, so that they are able to conserve water.

Many species of Cacti have long spines, these spines are actually modified leaves. These spines also allow for less water to be evaporated through transpiration by shading the plant, and also help it defend itself from water seeking animals.
