The amount of concrete needed has to be calculated in cubic yards or feet. If a large quantity is required it is better to have it delivered by the company that supplies ready-mix in trucks. For smaller quantities, a concrete mixer can be rented. For very small jobs, one can buy sacks of ready-mixed concrete that only need water.

To calculate your requirement, measure the volume, rounded to the nearest foot. This means the width x length x height.

To calculate odd shaped areas, convert them into rectangles. This makes it easier to calculate.

Underestimating the amount of concrete need can result in overtime for the crew, additional transport costs and a cold joint can occur. (A cold joint occurs when concrete is poured on set concrete)
