The right artium receives blood returning to the heart from the rest of the body. This blood is now low in oxygen and high in carbon dioxide, so when the atrium contracts, it pushes this un-oxygenated blood out and into the right ventricle, which will then sent the blood to the lungs to become oxygenated again for the process to start all over. This all happens in one heart beat
