The most common definition of the word potassium (when the word is used in the context of chemistry) is that is an alkali metallic element which is soft in texture, silver-white in colour and which can only be found in nature in the form of a compound with other elements.

Potassium can be obtained by the process of electrolysis of its common hydroxide (that is potassium hydroxide). It oxidises rapidly in air and has an adverse reaction when it comes into contact with water.

Potassium is used for various purposes such as the manufacturing of glass, the manufacturing of soap, the manufacturing of fertilisers and in the manufacturing of many types of drugs and chemicals. Potassium is defined as a metallic element which is important in the functions of the body such as the regulation of blood pressure and the water content in the cells, the transmission of impulses in the nerves, the process of digestion, the contraction of the muscles and the rate of heartbeat.
