Hong Kong is an area located just off the South East Coast of China in the Far East. Hong Kong was once a small fishing village but has grown to have a population of over 6 million.
Hong Kong was made popular in the 19th century when the British came to build it into a city, and it has developed into one of the most interesting in the world. Until 1997, Hong Kong was a British colony. It was officially handed over to China on the basis that it would become a Special Administrative Region (SAR). All matters within Hong Kong are now autonomous apart from foreign affairs and defence, which the British have retained within their control.
