Bond is a force which combines two or more atoms to form a molecule. There are four electrons present in the valence shell of an atom of carbon. So, carbon atom can make four bonds with other carbon atoms or atoms of different elements. Carbon atom can make four single covalent bonds. In a molecule containing carbon, carbon has the ability to make double or triple covalent bonds. When carbon atom shares one electron pair it forms single covalent bond. Similarly, it shares two and three electron pairs to make double and triple covalent bonds respectively.
