For people in normal health, there is enough oxygen in the air to breathe. The percentage by volume of oxygen in dry air is 21%.Some uses of oxygen are listed below.

Hospitals need oxygen for patients who have difficulty in breathing. Tiny premature babies often need oxygen, and people with lung diseases are kept alive by daily sessions with their breathing machines.

Industry has many uses for oxygen. The "oxy-acetylene" torch burns the gas ethyne in oxygen to produce a temperature of about 4000° C. this torch is used for cutting and welding metal plates.

The steel industry uses oxygen to burn off impurities, such as carbon, sulphur and phosphorous. The removal of these impurities turns brittle cast iron into strong steel.

Airplanes which fly at high altitude must carry oxygen. At a height of 5 km, the air pressure is only half that at sea level. Climbers who are tackling high mountains take oxygen with them.

Divers carry oxygen cylinders when they are working under water. Astronauts must carry oxygen, and even unmanned space flights need oxygen. To lift spacecraft into orbit, rockets burn kerosene in oxygen.

Air or oxygen is used in the treatment of sewage. If it were not for this treatment, many rivers and lakes would be spoiled by sewage.

Perhaps the best known medical application of oxygen is in oxygen therapy, where patients who are having trouble breathing are given doses of pure or nearly pure oxygen. Some common instances in which oxygen therapy is used include surgical procedures, following heart attacks, and during infectious diseases. In each case, providing a person with pure oxygen reduces the stress on his or her heart and lungs and speeds the rate of recovery.
Pure oxygen or air enriched with oxygen may also be provided in environments where breathing may be difficult. Aircraft that fly at high altitudes, of course, are always provided with supplies of oxygen in case of any problems with the ship's normal air supply. Deep-sea divers also carry with them or have pumped to them supplies of air that are enriched with oxygen.science.jrank.org

Liquid oxygen is used in the engines of space shuttles for example to increase the thrust force. It is used in space shuttles as its low density and low pressure makes it lightweight to store.
The engine is fuelled by liquid oxygen and kerosene. Kerosene is a flammable thin and colourless fuel it is also used in lamps and heaters.

The major use of oxygen is for breathing purpose. Oxygen is used in oxidation reactions. Oxygen is necessary during burning processes. It is widely used in different industries as an oxidizing agent. For example oxygen is used to remove impurities in steel industries. Oxygen is very helpful in cutting process of different metals. Cylinders of oxygen gas, mixed with other gases, are used in sub-marines, air crafts etc. Oxygen is also used in medical field. Moreover, oxygen is used as a medicine during the treatment of respiratory diseases.
