Information systems are the foundation for conducting business today. In many industries, survival and even existence without extensive use of IT is inconceivable, and information systems play a crucial role in increasingly productivity. Although information technology has become more of a commodity, when coupled with complementary changes in organisation and management, it can provide the foundation for new products, services and ways of conducting business that provide firms with a strategic advantage.

Here are six reasons why they are important

1/ Operational excellence- Businesses improve the efficiency of their operations in order to achieve higher profitability. Information systems are important tools available to managers for achieving higher levels of efficiency and productivity in business operations. 2/ Global Market - A greater consumer base means a much larger amount of information being passed through company hands; an entire world's worth of customers demand an effective system for processing all the information included in such operations.
3/ The passing of some laws, such as one that requires companies to hold staff emails for at least five years, has created a demand for greater database capability in the commercial world.
4/ Competitive Advantage - The early bird gets the worm, or in this case, the first businesses that implement successful information systems are the first to reap the benefits of having them. Those that come along later will be at a disadvantage.
5/ Customer-Supplier Intimacy - Allowing input from the customer to the supplier yields far happier customers, and the best and easiest way to do this is through an information system that links the customer to the supplier, such as an online order form with customisation options.
6/ There is an increase in the use of portable, wireless computers in the workplace; systems must be implemented to make sure that all of these devices are functioning smoothly.

Information technologies or IT as it is popularly called all over the world is extremely important in today's business scenario. It has evolved from being a support function to the core activities of manufacturing, marketing and finance to being a function that is causing a disruption in the market place.

Companies who have been slow to jump on to the IT band wagon have been left behind in the dust by their agile competitors. Two trends in the current IT landscape that has made information systems important are:

CRM - It is also known as Customer Relationship Management. It essentially identifies all the points where a potential customer interfaces with the organization and tries to enhance the experience.

BI - This is an abbreviation for Business Intelligence. BI tools enable an organization to get a deep insight into a particular issue. It could be the market place or financial performance of a particular department.
