As a fuel tank empties, air containing 20% oxygen and 80% nitrogen replaces the fuel. The oxygen and the fuel vapors can form an explosive mixture that requires only a spark to ignite. An inerting system replaces the expended fuel with nitrogen which will not form an explosive mixture with the fuel vapors. The nitrogen eliminates the possibility of an explosion in the fuel tank.
