Positive space is the main object, negative space is the objects around it, or the background.

Positive space refers to the shapes of objects.  Negative space refers to the shapes around objects.  It can be very helpful to develop drawing skills by focusing on the negative, rather than the positive space.  By drawing negative space, it is not possible to identify with the objects which are associated with positive space - for instance, a shoe, a house, or a person.  The artist must let go of preconceptions, because he or she does not have a ready 'symbol' for what the space around objects looks like.
It can be a difficult concept to grasp. One tool used by art teachers in teaching about positive and negative space was popularized in the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. In the exercise, students copy from an upside-down drawing or photograph.  Because the picture is upside-down, students don't readily recognize the objects in the picture. They are able to give equal attention to the positive and negative shapes. The result is often a much more accurate drawing.

In art, positive space contains the image that is intended as the focus of the piece of art, usually two- dimensional, as in a photograph, painting, etching or the like rather than sculpture. Negative space is the space around what the artist wants you to see. Negative space can be empty or, conversely, it can be filled with images that draw your eye toward the intended focus of the overall image.

They are actually terms used as a part of art, and most schools had held art lessons about this amazing things, that can also be found in part of a painting. Positive space is the shape of the object while negative space is about the huge area around or between the subject of the image, used most regularly by artisans as some sort of artistic effect, like an optical illusion to fool your naked eyes in the world of 3-dimensional figures, making it look "real", making it a key component in most artists composition and also a handy tool in the art process.

In most drawings, using the "negative and positive effect" as well, the subject of the art is depicted in dark black while the space around it is left blank (white), thus forming a silhouette of the apparent object.

Positive and negative space are terms that are bound to come up in an Introduction to Drawing Class. In making a drawing, the artist reduces the 3 - dimensional world to the 2 ~ dimensional plane of the paper. Positive and negative space is very important in understanding this process.
