It depends entirely on the material in question. Mostly, they end up taking up space in landfills because they don't get broken down by natural processes over time. Biodegradable simply means, roughly, that the material can be broken down by living things assigned to those tasks, such as earthworms, flies, molds, etc. It also is typically used in a way that includes natural erosive forces; chiefly water.
