Adults have 206 bones, since some of the bones with which we are born actually fuse as we grow.

Babies are born with 300 bones in their body and yet by the time they reach adulthood, they have only 206 bones. This is because some of the bones fuse together. If we didn't have bones you couldn't stand up, walk, bend, or do any of the things we take for granted. Without bones we would just be a puddle of skin on the floor.
Bones have two purposes: some provide structure, such as the backbone and the rib-cage, others provide protection for the important parts of our body such as the brain which the skull protects and the bone of your vertebrae, which protect your spinal column.
Bones are able to move with the help of the muscles that surround them. This means that you are able to move your head, shoulders, knees, ankles etc. Bones are a mixture of a hard substance which gives them the structure and living cells, which help them repair when broken. If bones were not living, when you broke your arm or leg, it simply wouldn't repair itself and you would be permanently broken.
The human hand has a staggering 27 bones in it and your face has14. The longest bone in your body is the thigh bone (or femur as it is also known) and did you know that human and giraffes have the same amount of bones in their neck?

A infant has 300-350 bones in the body. But as you grow older some of them fuse together. But total you will have 208. 28 in the skull, 24 in the ribs, 30 bones in each of the arms.

While there are 206 in an adult, I found it interesting to learn that children have more bones in their bodies than adults do. Infants have up to 350; some of these fuse together as the child matures.

The human Skelton consists of different kinds of bones .Bones provide support to our body ,in our body there are different type and sizes of bones. There are different sizes of bones in our body some bones are connected with each other while other are not interconnected with each other.

How many bones do we have in our body depends on how old we are. Young people have more bones then adults. As we grow up, some bones start separating and that also start increasing in number, while some other bone start decreasing in number. By the time when person or adult reach the full adulthood, there are normally 206 bones in the body. If we talk about the shortest bone of the body it is called as Stirrup. It is located in the inner part of the ear. It is so called because its shape similar to stirrup as stirrup normally used on a horse. There is long perception from the people that they consider spinal cord as the longest bone .well, it is not the spine which is made up of several bones. The longest bon in the human body is the thigh bone or we can say as" femur.

There are 206 bones in a normal adult human body. However, an individual is born with 300 bones. An infant comprises of regular bone and some bony structure made up of material called cartilage. At the very beginning, the cartilages are basically soft and tender and enough flexible. But as long as they grow, these cartilages become harder and turn into regular bone. The largest bone in the body is the femur, a leg bone, running from the hip to the top of patella. The smallest bone in the body is the stirrup within the eardrum. Bones are made up of various layers such as periosteum, compact bone, cancellous and bone marrow. Bones are responsible for making blood cells from bone marrow, bones develop the fundamental structure of the body, bones protect the internal organs.

The average person has around 206 bones. These bones are joined together and form a skeleton which is basically the 'framework' for bones. Bones vary in size and shape. The long bones which are part of the arms and legs work like girders which give a human strength to walk, run, hold or carry heavy items etc. The skull is a dome shaped bone which surrounds the brain and acts as its protector.

The ribs are also a cage. They act as a means of protecting the heart and lungs, but they are flexible enough to still enable us to breathe.

The longest bone in the body is the femur which generally makes up about one quarter of the body's overall height. The biggest bone is the pelvis, which is also known as the hip bone. The smallest bone is the stirrup which is about the size of a grain of rice. This bone is found within the ear and helps hearing.
