Insulin was discovered piece by piece, so its discovery cannot really be attributable to one person. In 1869, Paul Langerhams, a German physician had written about the existence of clusters of tissues which existed in the pancreas. These clusters were later found to release insulin into the surrounding blood capillaries. These clusters were referred to as islets (actually the islets of Nagerhams, after the discoverer). Attempts were then made to try and extract insulin through isolating it. Insulin was the word derived from the latin meaning island, again referring to Langerhams find.
It was not until 1920 that Frederick Banting a Canadian surgeon began working at the University of Toronto with Charles Best, under the guidance of Professor John Macleod, with the specific aim of isolating insulin. this was achieved around 1921 and by 1922 they had their own supply of insulin, which formed the first effective remedy for diabetes.

J.J.R. Macleod and Frederick Banting at the University of Toronto discovered insulin, which is a hormone produced in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin regulates the carbohydrate metabolism as well as the liver's ability to release fat. It is used to treat some forms of diabetes mellitus.

Banting followed the work of Oscar Minkowski, Polish-German physician who did pioneering work on the role of pancreas in digestion. In 1921, Banting joined Macleod at Toronto and extracted insulin from the pancreas of dogs. Banting was helped in his work by a medical student named George Best. They gave the name isletin to the new protein. Macleod along with James Collip, a biochemist, purified the protein to make it suitable for human testing. On January 11, 1922, a fourteen-year-old diabetic named Leonard Thompson was given the first injection of insulin.

Macleod and Banting were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923 for their discovery. Macleod shared his prize with Collip and Banting with Best. The primary structure of insulin was determined by the British molecular biologist Frederick Sanger to make it the first protein to have its structure completely known.
thanked the writer.

The insulin was first isolated in 1916 by the scientist Nicolae Pavelescu. After 4 years, 2 Canadian scientists Banting and Macleod won the Nobel prise for inventing the insuline. After that there were many disputes about the fact that Banting was inspired from Nicolae's work. The 2 canadians took the credit for his work and only after 50 years from Nicolae's discovery, when everybody already thought its a canadian invention, it was proved and confirmed that Nicolae , the roumanian scientist is th
