There is yet another way to determine the poles of a magnet when you do not have a magnetic compass. You can just suspend the magnet with a fine thread and the magnet will become stable after a few seconds. Look for the side that is directed to the North pole of the Earth. It will be the North pole of the magnet and vice versa.....Simple...

The easiest way is to use another magnet that is already marked. The
North pole of the marked magnet will be attracted to the South pole of
the unmarked magnet.

We can identify poles of a magnet be keeping it close to the compass and see whether the side of a magnet is repelled by the north pole of the compass or attracted. If attracted then it is the south pole of magnet and if repelled it is the north pole of the magnet

Attraction is the force of pull and repulsion is the force of push .to identify the poles of a magnet we can keep the magnet close to the compass and see if the side is pushed or pulled , in other words attracted or repelled . If it is attracted then it is the south pole ...if it is repelled it is the north pole
