The 7107 islands are currently divided into 3 island groups, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The capital of the Philippines is Manila which is situated on Luzon and is a busy port. It is the second largest city of the Philippines, second to Zuezon City, which is in fact a suberb.

There are 117 cities in the Philippines, the largest in terms of population is Quezon City with 2.3 million people. Then comes the capital Manila, then Caloocan City, Davao City, Cebu City, Zamboanga City, Pasig City, Valenzuela City, Las Piñas City and Antipolo City.

These are the largest 12 cities as per the 2000 census.

117 cities have formed the League of Cities of the Philippines to co-ordinate the tackling of issues such as improving the environment and improving public works. This is a non-government organisation that was founded in 1988.
