Scientists are still scratching their head on this one, but two of the main reasons may be these:

1. Chemical reactions occur because the products of the reaction have less energy than the reactants (drive towards less energy).

2. It also occur because the products are more random (less ordered) than the reactants (drive towards greater entropy).
