East Asia: China, Hong Kong S.A.R., Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan

South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka

Central Asia: Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan

Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam

Australasia: Australia, New Zealand, **Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea

**The Pacific Island Countries include:
American Samoa, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Federated States of Midway Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Pitcairn Islands, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, & Vanuatu.

If you tallied these countries up you would get 53, but there is no definitive border around Asia. Does that sound about right? Or have I missed any?

In strict sense there are 37 countries in Asia....as there is no definitive physical map there can be more.

Depends what you mean by Asia. Asia is divided into subcategories like Austral-Asia, South-Pacific, South-East Asia. If you include them all you will end up with around about 54 countries. Egypt is most controversial. I personally consider it Africa, but if you were to throw it in the equation (as some do) it would make it 55, but then again they are alleged countries. There is no true line that divides everything up formally or coherently. Take it with a grain of salt I say. Who's to decide whether a country is part of Asia or not is what we should be asking ourselves. What makes something Asian?
