Ii think South Africa tends to be the richest because its the only African country that's nearest to the NICs.
But Nigeria might be joining soon if the can control their economy.

I think Nigeria is the richest considering the amount of money been stolen out of the country on daily basis, the amount legislators are paid (just a senator's salary is bigger than the salary of the President of the United State of America, the money circulating in the economy and even their foreign reserve. Without the monies stolen out of the country the average Nigerian can still own a good house, more than one car, shelter and good food. If Nigeria had a common language like the South Africans, USA would not be able to compete with Nigeria.
Their wealth is the reason for their numerous laurels and award. Check out Philip Emegwali (designer of the fastest processor) Prof. Dora Akunyili, Prof. Wole Soyinka just to mention but a few.
There is virtually no state in Nigeria where you find solid minerals, petroleum is just one of the many. The wealth of each of these states can cater for the entire country. So, just agree with that Nigeria is the richest in Africa.

I think Nigeria should be ranked as the richest. Yes, South Africa might be more developed infra-structurally, but have you seen the economic progress in Nigeria within the last 8 years?

Nigeria has the fastest growing telecommunication sector in the world! Beating China, India and USA. Nigeria has the fastest growing banking sector in Africa.

With over 150 million people, it has the fastest growing number of billionaires and multi- millionaires. Haven't you heard of people like, Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga (Globacom), Femi Otedola, Jim Ovia, Adedoyin, Wale Tinubu, etc...

These are just a few names. Nigerian banks and companies are very busy buying up other companies and starting up business in many countries in Africa.

You need to visit Nigeria and see the amount of growth in different sectors. The middle class is growing at a fast rate too. The direct foreign investment coming into Nigeria is amazing and everyone wants to do business in Nigeria now.

The income from Oil and the many new industries is fast growing. I think the rest of the world should watch out for Nigeria.

It is hard to determine which country is the richest. South Africa is the richest country in Africa as regards trade and foreign reserves. Nigeria is second. As regards resources, Nigeria has the largest deposit in Africa and probably the world because most of the world's natural resources are present in Nigeria. More so, in terms of individual wealth, Nigeria has no match in Africa. Presently, an average banker in Nigeria receives 2,000 Great Britain Pounds monthly which is not the case in UK because I live in UK. Anyway, South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt need to work together to move Africa forward. No need for competition as we are all one.

I think both Nigeria and South African are the africa giant. Both country are very rich in their own right.  If Nigeria can get their act together, they could be China of the Africa. Both Nigeria and South Africa needs each other and work together for better Africa.

I have been living in South Africa for about 15 years after immigrating to New Zealand in 2008. It is undoubtedly the richest country in Africa. The Nigerians that keep saying that Nigeria is the richest country, please have a look at images of Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria etc. You will see the South African infrastructure is way better than Nigeria's infrastructure or any African country. South Africa is also one of the worlds biggest mineral producers. Billions and billions of dollars went into building South Africa's infrastructure which makes it the most developed country in Africa.
Sadly, South Africa will struggle in the future with such an un educated ruling party, the ANC. The President did not even attend a high school.

It is Mauritius in terms of citizen wealth, South Africa in terms of development and could be Nigeria or Libya in terms of economic potential.

If we use per capita income, then Mauritius is the wealthiest country with a per capita income of $13,100, followed by South Africa $12,000, Libya $ 11,400 and Seychelles $ 7,800. In GDP or national economic sense, South Africa is the biggest or the wealthiest economy with a GDP of $533 billion, followed by Nigeria $174 billion and Libya $65.79 billion.

The reason for countries like Mauritius and Seychelles having high per capita incomes but low GDP is that they are island nations with small populations and economically well developed small territories. Countries such as Libya and Nigeria have very small populations compared to area, very little development but are major oil exporters. South Africa is the most developed nation in Africa even though development is regional. Its economy has a manufacturing, trading and service base rather than just tourism or oil.
It is also the only African nuclear power and has its stock exchange listed amongst the top 10 in the world.

Best answer so far, I'm a Nigeria, I know Nigeria is God blessed country with all the natural resourceful nature and things, but for individual wealth NIGERIA come first. But for country in general in term of Development and economic South Africa come first and no other.   Take it on leave it, Nigeria is still the giant of Africa no doubt, if only Nigeria can work harder on Development and economic, not country will beat Nigeria, so if other Africa country don't hear there name on my post they should know that they are not among.

It can't be Nigeria because of that guy that tried to blow up that plane and there is no president and it can't be Ghana because Ghana is the dirtiest country in West Africa so I think the richest country in Africa is South Africa because most places there are clean and they are so well developed there.

Obviously South Africa.Nigeria may have a way bigger population and more resources, but if you don't use those resources properly, nothing significant will happen. Now South African on the other hand has a smaller population and smaller resources but by far is more developed in so many ways.Yes,the banking sector of Nigeria is developing, but a lot of those banks are South African banks.Nigeria should be way further ahead than South Africa, but it's not.Heck, who is hosting the Fifa 2010 World Cup?Nigeria might go on about how it is Africa's Giant, but definitely South Africa is the true Powerhouse of Africa.

Actually I am Canadian economist and according to its GDP I think it 's Mauritius. It is the only country in the world where public transport for students and senior citizens is free. The tourism sector is booming this coming year 2010. There is a lot of professionals guys leading this country, this why. In South Africa, it's a rich country but the population decreases its capita.

South africa is rich because of the level of literacy more south african youth are going to tertiary to further their studies than ever before , banking in SA is an underated degree/diploma here instead you to do Bcom monetery economics and or bachelor of economic science or Acturial science here because they are more advanced, but personally I don't like nigeria because its a predominantly muslim country which is why leaders focus more on personal wealth than the needs of its population. SA is the only African country where homosexuals have rights instead of just ecomomic or trading growth nigeria and all african countries shud focus on social growth.

Nigeria is the richest country in african. The  problem is the governament and miss management of money. Those countries like ghana and south africa that  you  people r sayin nigeria is bare better than them. Ghana is just a little country. Many ghana people came to nigeria to steal their goods but nigeria is still rich. South africa is rich aswell but nigeria is richer. Let forget the history about ghana because  they not that rich. I think siera lone is way bettet than ghana.

Nigeria is Undoubtedly the most richest country in Africa.  South Africa could claim that they have better infrastructure and all sort compared to Nigeria but understand one thing that Nigeria is the main market place for any business due to their population.  Infrastructure are at the background in Nigeria because of poor governance, corruption, and all that. The biggest financier of of AU is Nigeria.  Individually in Nigeria, there are a lots of millionaires, billionaires and recent Forbes report shows that Alhaji Aliko Dangote is among the top 100 millionaires and he seems to be the only African on the list.  South Africa is thriving in infrastructure and some other areas because your government is somewhat sensitive to issues like that.  Nigeria is very rich and thus, the most richest country in Africa.  If you have not been to Nigeria visit Nigeria and confirm things yourself.  Nigerians ride the best cars in fact, they ride latest cars all the time and the go for the best at all times.
