when  a liquid is heated, the molecules in it stars getting separated from each other . The inter molecular attraction is lost when heated .So when a liquid is heated, it turns into gaseous state. When this gas is further heated, again the intermolecular attraction becomes weak and gas becomes lighter and lighter , and may react with some other elements present in the atmosphere.
