• What is a thesis
A thesis, also known as a dissertation, is a piece of work that is submitted to support a candidate's studies in order for them to get an academic qualification such as a degree, and will present the student's research and findings.

The word can also be used to describe the underlying claim of a piece of work.
The point of detailing the meaning of the word, thesis, is to illustrate how it is not possible for somebody else to look for, or to suggest topics for your thesis because, unless they have been on the same course as you, they will have no idea of what it is that you have actually learned.

• Ideas for a thesis
A first degree will take three years of full time study and will very often be concluded with a thesis, as well as examinations. In some instance a thesis is only required at Masters level and above. This means that each student will have been more than aware of the requirements of their course for a long time, and will have been having their thoughts turned towards a thesis by their lecturers and tutors.

Because any subject at degree level will encompass many different areas, students are able to select components, often called modules, which they would like to study. These modules are worth varying amounts, often categorized by points, which, when put together will make up the degree.

If a thesis is required, ideas will be mooted throughout the course and will most certainly have been discussed by peer groups. These conversations usually direct students into forming an idea of what their thesis is going to be, and the direction it will take. Most institutions will also provide tutorials on how to construct a thesis and these are invaluable sources of information.
