The word "winter" originated from the old Germanic word which means "times of water" and is used for referring to the rain and snow of winter in the middle and high latitude areas of the globe. In European languages, winter is considered to be a time of inactivity (dormancy) as many plants and crops don't grow well in winter and the insects and animals also show lesser activity.

The word "summer" originated from Roman, old English and it means fertility, strength and warmth. The concept of summer in European languages is associated with growth and maturity especially that of
plants. Many festivals can be seen in the history of the world to celebrate the arrival of summer.
