The main industries down there is gold and diamond mining, and agriculture. You'll find many fruits, wines, and tea (Rooibos from the Cape) grown and made in South Africa, which are exported to nearby African countries and Europe. Not sure about the States.
Under Apartheid, South Africa was one of the world's largest economies. It had a negative inflation because. One US dollar back then would make a third of a rand. Nowadays, one US dollar would make 7 rand.
