Hostas are bullet proof. Could be Japanese beetles. Is the dog peeing on them? Water them once a day( even though they don't need it). If they wither this year, they'll be back in the spring. Are they near a propane tank or vent to a boiler,water heater etc? I drive over mine occasionally, the dog pees on them, Jap beetles eat them and they never die.
