The Barbie was invented when Ruth Handler, saw her daughter play with paper dolls and noticed that she gave every doll the role of an adult. It was during this time that most of the dolls sold in the market were all infants and so the idea of producing an adult doll was passed on by her to her husband Elliot who was the co founder of the Mattel Toy Company.

This idea seemed too brilliant due to which it was launched at the American International Toy Fair on March 9, in the year 1959. And the name given to this adult doll was Barbara Millicent Roberts. Soon after Barbie's friend Ken Carson was created in 1961. This Barbie doll was sold all over as the "Teen-age Fashion Model". The company claims to sell at least 3 Barbie dolls ever second. Today it is not only sold as a toy but has also moved into branding goods like books, fashion and video games.

The barbie doll was invented because a girl named barbara was bored on a rainy day so her mother made her a paper doll that looked like her. Later on it became 3 dimensional so that barbara had something to play with

Ruth Handlar, Elliott Handlar, & Harold Mattson owned a company that made wooden picture frames. Elliott & Harold made the frames while Ruth sold them. With the extra pieces of wood, Ruth made doll furniture. That started out there toy company called MATTEL. Later, Barbie was invented.
It was invented because Ruth Handlar saw his daughter(barbara-how he got the name Barbie) playing with her paper doll and having it have adult roles, not as a baby. That sparked an idea for him. He made Barbie with Elliott Handlar & Harold Mattson, naming it after his daughter. They showed it at The New York Toy Show in 1959. It became a huge hit! And the rest was history...

Because people were bored. And there was no internet. Or technology.
