When lightning strikes the ground, it is known to create 'clinkers'. Clinkers are carbon deposits that are similar to glass. These deposits form in a similar structure to a tree, as it has many branches splitting off from the main trunk. The carbon that's created, or the 'glass-like- structures, are formed due to the high temperature from the lightning being focused on the small point in which the lightning hits the ground. The sand and all the other minerals that are found within the ground are liquefied due to the intensity of the electricity that is passing through. There is a huge amount of energy, and hence the ground around the area in which the lightning strikes generally alters in terms of composition. Clinkers can be found, even though many people have never heard of them, and they can also be purchased in some good gem shops.

This kind of question appears to be from academia, and as always when an academic question comes up on Blurtit, you must know that there are other ways you can find out the information you need to know. This sounds a lot like a high school science question, so as well as providing an insight into what happens, I'll also tell you that the best place for you to look to find out precisely what you need to know is the textbook you were given at the beginning of your course. If you are still struggling answering the question then you can speak to your teacher, too. Your teacher will be more than happy to help you with the question and to ensure that you know what you will need to do in the future, should you be asked again.
