How Does Self-disclosure Contribute To Self Knowledge?
By sharing honestly about ourselves with another human being we tell the truth about ourselves. In revealing our true selves in a dynamic relationship where communication flows both ways we are able to see who we truly are mirrored back, that is if the person we share with is honest and trustworthy to provide us feedback. We come to share and hear both the good and bad about ourselves in a safe friendship. Otherwise if we don't risk to self-disclosure, our relationships remain superficial. We are busy guarding ourselves with protecting behaviors or running from true emotional intimacy which is what we all desire. To risk telling the truth, i.e. Self-disclosure can open the door for receiving/giving unconditional love. We cannot reveal our true selves to everyone, as this would be without boundaries, so pick a safe person, but the rewards are great.
