It is a sedimentary rock, and is therefore formed when layers of sand/mud and animal remains fall to the bottom of an ocean or lake, and slowly decompose and are crushed together by the weight of the water, forming a rock. This is why sedimentary rocks often contain fossils- its those dead animals.

Limestone is formed through different processes of sedimentation. Silica in the form of chert or flint clay, silt and sand makeup limestone which is known as CaCo3. For all the processes and more on Limestones please visit the following web page.

Ages and ages ago, there was a layer of rock under the sea, dead skeletons of sea creatures built up and then sand washed on top, due to all the weigh of the water and sand, the skeletons compressed against the layer of rock so they emerged. That is how limestone is formed. Hope that was helpful :)

Limestone is a type of sedimentary rocks which is composed of calcite and CaCO3. It may be formed inorganically or by the biochemical processes.

There are different types of limestone because of variety of conditions under which it is produced.
Coral reefs are one of the examples of limestone produced in form of the skeletons of coral invertebrate animals. Large limestone deposits are found inland, such as the exposed limestone in Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico.

Chalk is another form of biochemically produced limestone. It is a soft porous rock made of skeletal parts of microscopic organisms. It produces white cliffs of Dover, England.
