If opposite sides are not the same length or corner angles are not 90°, it is not a rectangle.

If opposite sides are parallel, it may be a parallelogram or a trapezoid. The well-known formula for finding the area of such figures is the average length of the parallel sides multiplied by the distance between them.

If opposite sides are not parallel, you may not be able to find the area without additional information. Such information might include at least one angle, the length of a diagonal, or the coordinates of the corner points.

Compute or measure a diagonal and use Heron's Formula on the resulting two triangles.
_____
As you know from playing with straws or toothpicks, the lengths of 4 sides is not sufficient information to define the shape. Other helpful information includes
  - the measure of one of the angles
  - the measure of one of the diagonals (as above)
  - knowledge of the relation of two of the sides (for example, opposite sides are parallel).

You cannot do it without additional information.

Consider 4 straws tied together with a string threaded through them. The area they enclose is not determined, so can be anything you like (within some limits). If you specify one of the diagonal lengths, then you have enough information to solve the problem. The same is true if you specify one angle, or if you say two sides are parallel.

If you can break the problem into two triangles, you can use Heron's Formula.

One way is to break it up into several smaller geometric shapes such as triangles, parallelograms etc.  There are devices and formulas for doing this is other ways.  One is the planimeter.  Depends on how mauch accuracy you need. If high degree of accuracy is nec., contact a land surveyor.

You need enough information to determine the area without ambiguity.

If you have a triangle, you can use Heron's formula.
If you have a quadrilateral, you need to know the shape. In addition to the side lengths, you would need to know something else--a diagonal, an angle, that 2 sides are parallel, or the coordinates of the corners, for example.
If you have more than 4 sides, you need more information as with the quadrilateral.
