On a map, the "legend" is pretty much a key. For example, it might tell you something like: BLUE SHADED ARE=Bodies of Water, RED AREA=Unpopulated Area, GREEN=Mountain Ranges, etc...This feature on a map is to help you read the map better and to understand the symbols and colors on it.
