On a map, the "legend" is pretty much a key. For example, it might tell you something like: BLUE SHADED ARE=Bodies of Water, RED AREA=Unpopulated Area, GREEN=Mountain Ranges, etc...This feature on a map is to help you read the map better and to understand the symbols and colors on it. The legend is like the key of the map where you see the symbol tha represent something for exampling any map and on the legend the blue colour must be the sea.

It is a useful thing on a map that helps you explain what certain things are on the map. It is mostly located in the bottom Corner.
