The Alps are fold mountains and started forming 80 million years ago. They were formed when African and European tectonic collided. Pressure between the two plates means they are still moving today but slowly, about 1mm every year, however this could result in the closing up of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Alps are Fold Mountains formed millions of years ago and over an equally long period of time by the collision of the Eurasian and African plates. The Alps today are found in Europe passing through the countries of Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein, France and Germany. The highest peek in the Alps is 4,808 m high.

The formation was a result of geological forces that resulted in the plates to shift their positions. These plates are moving today as well but at very slow speeds, around a millimeter a year. These geological forces rendered Central Europe apart two hundred and fifty million years ago. The initial movement towards east and west came to an end and the softening of the European crust allowed Africa to thrust northwards.

The continents that are present today existed according to geologist millions of years ago in a cluster.

They were formed due to plate collision.--Continental Continental Convergence of the plate boundaries.
Fold mountains were then crumpled and form due to the density of both continental plates were almost the same and they buckled and forced each other upwards.

The Alps were thus formed.
