During the earth's history there have been many changes to the climate these changes have ranged from the ice ages to periods of very warm and hot conditions.  The factors that cause this have been found to be volcanic eruptions as well as changes to earth's orbit as well as the energy that is continually released from the sun.  Way back in the 18th century it was discovered that human activities which could have been connected to the Industrial Revolution had an impact in the changes on the composition of the atmosphere, this would have had an impact on the climate.

These factors include:

  • Burning of Fossil Fuels such as coal and oil
  • Deforestation - this causes concentrations of greenhouse gases.  These greenhouse gases cause problems as they stop heat from escaping into space.  These gases are required as it is these that keep the planet warmer than it would otherwise be. However, due to the concentration of these gases it means that the earth's temperature is rising at a rapid rate.

The United States has a Climate Policy in place and it is using voluntary and incentive based programs to help reduce the emissions as well as promoting the technology and science that is required in order to achieve this goal.

The level of human-generated gas emissions in the United States is over 85 in the forms of carbon dioxide and the burning of fossil fuels.

Half of these emissions come from power plants, whilst a third come transportation in the country.

The United States produces the "National Inventory of US greenhouse gas emissions", and this is done in order to understand any increases that occur in the country each year.
