The sand generally comprises of 20 percent of the earth's desert. This sand is mostly found in the form of sand sheets and sand seas. The six different forms of dessert are Mountain and basin deserts, Hamada deserts, which comprise of plateau landforms,

Regs (which consist of rock pavements), Ergs (which are formed by sand seas) and Intermontane Basins. The left over surfaces of waterless lands comprises of uncovered bedrock outcrops, desert soils, and fluvial deposits as well as alluvial fans, playas, desert lakes, and oases. Bedrock outcrops usually take place as small mountains bounded by widespread erosional plains.
