Sahara Desert is the huge desert of North Africa and it has some unique characteristics. Sahara desert covers 3,500,000 square miles (9,000,000 km2) which is a little smaller than area of United States. Sahara has an uplifted center with a low plateau and its average elevations are only 1,000 to 1,500 feet above the sea level. It has extreme dryness and an average annual rainfall is about 5 inches (130 mm). The temperature in the day is about 100° F (38° C) while it goes down after the sun set. Sahara desert is considered as a major source of oil, gas, and metal ores. The animals found in Sahara Desert include hares, foxes, lizards, snakes, and insects.
