India has 500 years history in coffee. It is cultivated in various regions of India like Hassan, Wayanad, Coorg, Chikmagulur, and Andhra Pradesh. However, there are a number of reasons because of which Indian market is considered as a small market for coffee cultivation. India has never attained a leadership role in this cultivation, though it has the potential. Just take one example of this market. During Mughal period, only elites consume coffee and therefore, it was not in demand and no focus was given towards its cultivation. Moreover, the historical trends of coffee in India shows that regulations in this sector can hinder the growth of coffee in India. Because traders want to work freely and without limitations.

Now from this analysis, it is evident that India is facing challenges for coffee cultivation. In future its position will go more severe, if agricultural extension services will not be promoted in non-traditional areas. Moreover in future, use of biotechnology can also make India as an important coffee producer in the world .
