Why are some people more intolerant of those who are deaf, than they are of those with other sensory disabilities?

Perhaps because they know that they can't be heard. We love to talk and we really want to be heard. Most relationships fall apart because people don't feel heard and acknowledged. Perhaps this feeds into this?

Maybe, though eye contact is said to be very important in interaction too, and yet people do seem to be more tolerant of those with visual impairments than they are of the deaf...
