Why do we have wax in our ears?

Ear wax aka "Cerumen" is a yellowish waxy substance secreted in the ear canal of humans & other mammals.  It protects the skin of the ear canal, assists in cleaning & lubrication, & also provides some protection from bacteria, fungi, insects & water.
