The word state or province can be used for a particular area of land in a country. A country can be a large one and to administrate the whole area by one governing body can be a very tough task. So usually the area is divided into several smaller areas for the convenience of administration. One of the smaller areas of land can be called a state or a province.

Usually this division happens for administrative reasons but the bases on which a country can be divided into states are myriad. It can be divided on the basis of language or sometimes other cultural characteristics also play a vital role. Sometimes even religion plays an important role while deciding on the division. But this kind of division usually happens only in a very large country and in smaller countries it is only administrative reasons that play a role in deciding the state borders.

The word province is defined as the state or territory occupied by one of the component districts of a nation. It is the proper sphere or extent of the activities of a person. The word province is also defined as the name of a secondary level of government in some countries.

In some countries, the word province is not used. An alternate term is used instead of the word province. In countries such as the United States of America, Australia and India, the political divisions within these countries are known as states. In Japan, the word prefecture is used for each political division within the country. In France and Italy, the word region is used to define each of the political divisions within the country.

During the time of the British Empire, several colonies of the United Kingdom had the title of province. Canada was then known as the province of Canada and the state of South Australia in Australia was known as the province of South Australia.
