Since pumice is a volcanic rock, and retains its useful properties only when it is young and unaltered, pumice deposits are found in areas with young volcanic fields. Worldwide, over 50 countries produce pumice products. The largest producer is Italy, which dominates pozzolan production and also produces some pumice. Other major pumice producers are Greece, Chile, Spain, Turkey, and the United States.
In the United States, Arizona, California, New Mexico and Oregon are the major producers of pumice, accounting for the majority of the nation’s pumice and pumicite production.

Pumice basically is an extremely vesicular pyroclastic igneous rock of transitional to siliceous magmas which comprise of rhyolite, trachyte and phonolite. It is generally light in colour varying from white, yellowish, grey, grey brown and at times dull red.

Pumice is found extensively in the Pacific Ocean. It has a standard porosity of nearly 90 per cent. Pumice is usually created as pyroclastic material which is released in the air as froth comprising of heaps of gas bubbles or vesicles, the lava freeze rapidly and the vesicles are enclosed in the rock.

Pumise is assumed to be a glass because it comprises no crystal structure and usually differs in density on the basis of the thickness of the solid matter amid the bubbles, a number of sections float in water.
