What Is The Difference Between Language And Communication?

Animals and small babies cannot talk but this doesn't mean that we can't understand some of what they try to communicate. Even though they can't speak or use language to express what they are meaning, we can still understand them through their actions and movements -  they can communicate. A dog may whimper if it wants to go outside or a baby will cry if it is hungry. The difference between language and communication is that language is not essential to get across information or expression.

• Communication is a form of expression that doesn't necessarily use language.

You can look at a grumpy or cheery facial expression for example, and know how a person is feeling. Communication is the reason for of all language. The purpose of language is to express and inform , so it is a form of communication.

An example would be if the people were from two different countries. One important thing to remember here however, is that different cultures may use the same movements and gestures as ways of communicating but they are sometimes used in different ways and can be misunderstood.

Journalism, advertising and media industries are all based on communication. They can communicate a message without using language through all forms of media and use images, diagrams or music to portray this message.
